A new book examines Apple from the inside out, revealing details about the company’s level of detail that continue to give it an edge in the market.

“Inside Apple: How America’s Most Admired-and Secretive-Company Really Works,” by Adam Lashinsky, senior editor-at-large at Forbes, shares highly guarded secrets about the company’s development and design processes, as well as insight into former founder and CEO Steve Jobs, who passed away in November of last year.

Apple is notoriously private about its inner workings, but the new book provides a window into the company’s structure that shows it often sacrifices cost-effectiveness in favor of consumer preferences. That laser focus on what its customer desires, from circuitry to packaging, is why Apple retains such a loyal consumer base, according to Lashinsky.

For example, the book describes a closely guarded “Packaging Room” devoted entirely to device packaging. One employee reportedly spent months opening hundreds of prototypes to refine and perfect the consumer’s experience when opening their boxes for the first time.

“How a customer opens a box must be one of the last things a typical product designer would consider,” Lashinsky writes, “Yet for Apple, the inexpensive box merits as much attention as the high-margin electronic device inside.”

Further, product designers are given priority, and during a product’s development phase, they have no contact with Apple’s finance department. The system allows designers to focus solely on creating the highest-quality product without having to worry about financial limitations.

Lashinsky also reveals that shortly before his death, Steve Jobs met with Ren Ng, CEO of Lytro, which makes highly advanced cameras that create “living” pictures. Jobs previously told his biographer Walter Isaacson that he hoped to reinvent the photography industry, and Lytro could have been part of that plan.

With the company still building on Jobs’ vision after his passing, cameras will likely remain on Apple’s radar as it continues to push its devices into the market.

“Inside Apple” is sure to intrigue readers and industry insiders alike, and emerging companies will likely take note of Apple’s attention to detail and dedication to their customers.

Jobs’ vision continues to inspire new devotees each day, and as he famously said, “we don’t know where it will lead. We just know there’s something much bigger than any of us here.”

An app that keeps an eye on security threats strives to raise awareness of malware’s growing menace, and educate smartphone users of mobile security’s increasing importance.

Lookout Mobile’s “Threat Tracker” app responds to malware’s imminent hazards using 3D imagery to visualize real-time threats. Users can scroll over a map of the globe and watch stars symbolizing viruses zoom across the screen from all corners of the earth. The app doesn’t prevent infections itself, but does tell users the week’s top infections, the immediacy of the danger, and helps with precautions.

The Threat Tracker intends to draw users towards Lookout Mobile’s main business, which is comprehensive malware protection, including a system advisor, a Wi-Fi security warning, and cloud-based restorative features.

Security companies will likely begin bolstering their mobile malware offerings, especially as smartphone usage explodes, along with viruses and scams targeting themn.

Google’s OS is most often targeted by these ever-increasing variety of attacks, using methods like privacy-compromising Trojans and interface vulnerabilities, so it requires enhanced security.

Hackers can easily develop and launch corrupted software on Android’s open source OS, and since the Android Marketplace doesn’t screen every application, malware is a growing problem for that platform.

Security leaders like McAfee and Juniper Networks are joining Lookout Mobile with protection programs created for smartphone users. The companies warn that the same viruses that plague PCs can infect plugged-in smartphones, and urge users to treat their mobile security with appropriate caution.

People store incredible amounts of information on their smartphones, thanks to social networking mobile apps. In addition, mobile security companies’ functions will likely grow as mobile payment systems pick up momentum and the devices store and control critical financial information.

Some mobile payment companies are already enlisting the help of mobile security companies, underscoring the severity of the threat to these systems. Still, companies can do so much, and individuals still lag behind when it comes to protecting their smartphones, making awareness critical.

Products like Lookout Mobile’s Threat Tracker are part of the initial wave educating smartphone customers about the likelihood of viruses and malware on their smartphones. Its success will increase growing public awareness that smartphones are also vulnerable to viruses.

Office workers around the world are detoxing their inboxes this week, devoting five whole days to organizing the often unwieldy barrage of electronic communications.

Is This Thing On?, or ITTO, is our Wednesday column showing how everyday people use technology in unexpected ways.

The Fifth International “Clean Out Your Inbox Week” challenges workers [to take a moment to get back on track and shovel out from under the e-mail pile. U.S. workers currently devote about 25 percent of their time dealing with over 500 billion e-mail messages each day.

The designated week isn’t about deleting the contents of the inbox, but focuses instead on getting a better handle on which messages are important, therefore allowing users to boast, albeit briefly, “inbox zero” on Facebook or Twitter.

“Let’s say you have 300 items in your inbox,” said Marsha Egan, a workplace productivity coach and author of the book “Inbox Detox and the Habit of Email Excellence.” “It’s akin to having 300 separate pieces of paper on your desk — not in files, not in piles — there for you to just shuffle through. Therein becomes part of the productivity drain.”

Organizing emails in the right folder rather than keeping them in one huge list is a good way to clear through the distraction. Egan suggests thinking of the inbox as a house or apartment.

“You get the mail each day and you sort it,” Egan said. “You would never put it back in!” By doing the opposite with your e-mail inbox, “you’re setting yourself up for productivity problems and stress problems,” she said.

For example, a general inbox shouldn’t store an email from a boss requesting a specific report in three weeks. Scrolling past it everyday until the project is due doesn’t increase efficiency, rather, it causes unnecessary distraction, and worse, it can cause the owner to experience pangs of anxiety or forgetfulness that prompt repeated readings of the message. Egan calls this the office’s equivalent to the movie “Groundhog Day.”

To remedy the situation, Egan recommends workers set up an action folder for things that need to be done at a future date — and set calendar reminders as the deadline nears. She also suggests creating other folders for reference material, like a personal library for client correspondence and project documentation.

The next step in tackling an inbox is sorting, which Egan says should be based on five actions: to-do, delete, delegate, defer, and save for reference.

“But don’t delay!” she stresses. “Don’t say, ‘I’ll decide another day.’” This is “clean” out the inbox week, not postpone it, after all, and Egan isn’t the only one handing out advice and solutions.

Google is offering tips as well this week, making sure to mention its 350 million member-strong Gmail product, which uses threads to compress inboxes, rather than manually moving them into designated folders.

Gmail makes it easy for users to search for specific messages by collating emails into threads, which is helpful since researches found people with high thread-count e-mails were less likely to use or need to use folders, and people with more threads were less likely to need to scroll through their inboxes.

Once the e-mail system is sparkling clean, experts recommend adopting responsible practices to keep it that way.

“There’s a huge difference between sorting your inbox and working it,” Egan said.

Egan says e-mail users need discipline, likening her approach to dealing with children — they can’t go to bed before they put all of their toys away. Don’t leave the office before taking a last sweep of that inbox, she says.

A slimmed-down inbox may inspire workers to keep the momentum going, and targeting other electronics clutter could be the next step.

Users can toss items like an MP3 player, stand-alone GPS unit, and even an older digital camera, since built-in capabilities or apps on smartphones can most likely handle picture-taking, directions and musical needs. Also, extra USB drives can also be cleaned out, saving files instead using cloud technology or simply by emailing the important files as an attachment and saving them in a folder.

The idea of a week devoted to cleaning out your inbox may be lighthearted, but the productivity reasons behind it are enough to prompt some businesses to revisit e-mail use entirely.

For example, Atos Origins, a French technology firm, plans to discontinue using internal e-mail in favor of social media.

The company’s CEO, Thierry Breton, points out massive data production is polluting the working environment and invading workers’ personal lives in the form of unnecessary e-mail communication. His company plans to revolutionize business communications among his 74,000 employees in 42 offices by eliminating e-mail by 2013.

Atos will experiment with the right combination for its communication needs, but the company reports it has already reduced internal e-mail by 20 percent since it began working toward its zero-e-mail goal several months ago.

One day other companies may also rethink their communications systems, but in the meantime, employees can save themselves time, energy and aggravation if they celebrate Clean Out Your Inbox Week by reducing their own digital garbage.

The Pope praised the efficiency of digital communications, while at the same time pointing out potential pitfalls, illustrating the conflict between contemplation and communication.

In a subtle nod to Twitter, Pope Benedict XVI said in his World Communication Day address, “In concise phrases, often no longer than a verse from the Bible, profound thoughts can be communicated, as long as those taking part in the conversation do not neglect to cultivate their own inner lives.”

The pontiff acknowledged that today’s communication process is “largely fueled by seeking advice, ideas, information and answers,” which, in moderation, can help connect people. But, the Catholic Church’s leader maintained this also poses the danger of being “bombarded with answers to questions they have never asked and to needs of which they were unaware.”

The trend can lead to a lack of reflection, which the Pope fears threatens spiritual growth. To address the concern, the religious leader is calling for more silence to balance the relentless chatter, and greater selectivity when choosing websites, apps and social networks.

The Pope’s ideas make strike a chord with many who feel the relentless volume and pace of digital communication is physically and even spiritually draining, but they also underscore the often bumpy intersection between tradition-rich institutions and cutting-edge technologies.

In the past, the Vatican integrated social media tools like Facebook and Twitter into its official news.va website, providing the faithful more ways to navigate its news archives. The official website serves as a one-stop shop for news and information republished from various Vatican and religious news agencies, and features the ability to live stream papal events, as well as link homilies, statements, and speeches from the site to Twitter accounts and Facebook.

In addition, the Holy See also acquired a Twitter account, debuted a Facebook page dedicated to the late Pope John Paul II’s beautification, launched a YouTube channel, and created a “Pope2You” mobile app.

These digital initiatives support the church’s mission and recognize the value of the Internet and power of the social media as significant tools to keep its specific message in the forefront of people’s minds, in addition to modernizing the perceived outdated Vatican.

But, at the same time the Vatican embraces mobile technologies, it also voices concern over some of its uses. Recently, Pope Benedict warned Christians to favor real-life relationships over online temptations.

The 84-year-old pontiff is reportedly quiet by nature. The theologian speaks softly and is said to be an excellent listener, which may a personal reason for his call to reconsider the over-sharing of everything. And, he points out, there may be more powerful ways to authentically communicate meaningful things.

The Pope reminds his flock, “Between people who are in love: gestures, facial expressions and body language are signs by which they reveal themselves to each other.”

President Obama stressed ways tech companies like Apple can boost America’s economic recovery, calling for an end to moving jobs and resources offshore.

In his State of the Union address, the President referred to the technology sector many times in last night’s speech, which included Steve Jobs’ wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, as an invited guest, seated in First Lady Michelle Obama’s box. As television cameras focused on Jobs’ widow, President Obama described fostering a culture of talent, skill, and innovation in the U.S. similar to the one famously upheld by Apple’s co-founder.

“An economy built to last is one where we encourage the talent and ingenuity of every person in this country…we should support everyone who’s willing to work; and every risk-taker and entrepreneur who aspires to become the next Steve Jobs,” he said.

At the same time President Obama praised Jobs’ talent and work ethic, however, he criticized companies that shift jobs and financial assets offshore as a way to reduce their tax burden, and called for legislation that would put an end to the practice.

The President’s remarks were not directed solely at Apple, since many U.S. corporations engage in offshore manufacturing and sales. However, Apple is one company that depends heavily on manufacturing products and generating profits overseas to avoid high taxes and keep its supply chain flowing smoothly.

Apple, Google, and Cisco are among several multinational companies currently pressing lawmakers for a tax break, on the grounds they will bring more than $1.3 trillion in profits earned overseas back to the U.S. if they are exempted from paying federal income taxes on the foreign earnings.

In yesterday’s earnings report, Apple specifically mentioned it has more than $60 billion in cash offshore, perhaps sending a message to the Obama administration it is looking for an incentive to bring the funds back home.

In his address, Obama alluded to a plan to offer tax breaks to companies that bring jobs and revenue stateside, but he did not provide details of how the plan will work. Tax breaks could encourage Apple and other technology giants to repatriate money earned on sales in countries such as China, potentially strengthening the U.S. economy.

The Fair Labor Association is also scrutinizing conditions in Apple’s manufacturing business in China. Audits last year revealed repeat offenses of substandard working conditions and poor treatment of workers at the company’s Foxconn factory, which reportedly led to a string of suicides in 2010.

However, Obama recognized the factors that hold companies back from hiring in the U.S. He mentioned the many open technology-sector jobs, and the lack of talented, skilled workers to fill them, despite large numbers of people looking for work. He stressed the need for partnerships between technology companies and higher education, ensuring a skilled American workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs that will reduce companies’ dependence on foreign labor.

In addition to being Apple’s manufacturing base, China represents the company’s fastest-growing market. Earlier this month, police called off the opening of Apple’s Beijing retail store after crowds waiting for the 4S launch grew so large they threatened public safety. As the U.S. technology market grows more crowded and competitive, Apple and its rivals increasingly look to foreign countries as a source of profits.

Apple’s operations in China are key to its supply chain and revenues, and the company isn’t likely to bring its entire operation back to the U.S., despite Obama’s urgings. However, if the policy changes the President is calling for become reality before his term ends, Apple and other companies could be facing big changes in how they do business.

McDonald’s Twitter promotion recently capsized, thanks to users’ overlooked creativity, highlighting the pitfalls of social media advertising as business usage of it burgeons.

The fast food company meant to share supplier stories in a #MeetTheFarmers campaign, but users hijacked the related #McDStories hashtag and upset the entire promotion.

For example, @flatfootphil’s story about the Golden Arches was less than savory. “McDStories…a nice juicy Filet o’fish. With added worm. Still alive. Nice. Never again,” he wrote.

@MuzzaFuzza added, “I haven’t been to McDonalds in years, because I’d rather eat my own diarrhea.”

“McDStories: McDialysis? I’m loving it!” enthused another Twitter user.

Comments in this vein resulted in #McDStories’ demise only two hours after its creation.

But McDonald’s is not the only organization to endure online bashing during an advertising campaign, as social media promotions are quickly proving to be a double-edged sword.

For instance, Australia’s Qantas airlines took an online beating after inviting Twitter users to describe their “dream luxury in-flight experience.” This campaign went awry as angry customers fantasized about a company that gave “more than 3mins notice that the whole airline is on strike.”

Kenneth Cole also felt the heat after marketing its products during the Arab Spring. “Millions in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available,” the company wrote last February, provoking outrage at the comparison.

Non-profit organizations have experienced similar issues during their online campaigns. @LGBTfacts, for example, began as an online resource for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. But it quickly devolved into a stream of offensive remarks as users offered up their own LGBT “facts.”

Mike Stuchbery, for example, proclaimed, “When cornered, the male homosexual can shoot glitter into the eyes of an attacker to blind them.”

Social media advertising has taken off over the last years, prompting many corporations and organizations to plug in for greater brand recognition. It is now a multimillion-dollar enterprise and shows no signs of slowing down.

But comments like Stuchbery’s suggest online crowdsourced promotions may not always help companies and organizations seeking to get an Internet boost. In fact, if they are not careful about social media advertising, corporations may quickly become laughing stocks in the online world, unless they manage their real-world reputations first.

Sharp is collaborating with accessory maker Q-Pot on a phone that looks like a bar of chocolate, to be released in Japan just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Japanese company Q-Pot made its name in faux chocolate-covered accessories, and the upcoming Sharp smartphone is no exception. Designed by Tadaaki Wakamatsu, the phone features a rear panel that looks like a “three-dimensional melting chocolate block” and an Android 2.3 skin that makes the screen appear as if chocolate is oozing over it.

The smartphone doesn’t offer any out-of-the-ordinary features besides its novel look, but it could appeal to Japanese consumers as a unique Valentine’s gift, especially considering Sharp will produce it in a limited run of 50,000.

Smartphones are ubiquitous in Japan, and distinctive models that stand out from the crowd are in high demand among consumers there.

Last year, luxury crystal maker Baccarat launched a smartphone with Sharp in Japan, which featured an image of a crystal chandelier on its case and showed images of crystal tumblers and wineglasses to signal outgoing and incoming calls, highlighting the Japanese market’s desire for stylish, high-end smartphone models, along with cute, novelty ones like the upcoming chocolate phone.

Despite new handsets hitting the market every few weeks, most smartphones follow a fairly standard, expected form. But, a few designers get inspired to break out of the mold and create unusual designs.

For example, last year’s Origami handset created by Chengyuan Wei was made of paper and arrived flat, then transformed into a 3D handset when it was folded. Other specialty phones target elite customers, such as the solid gold Aesir phone available in Russia, while some focus on fun, such as the Nexus S robot phone from toymaker Hasbro.

Whether consumers view it as a silly diversion or a grand, romantic gesture, Sharp’s chocolate phone just might replace the traditional box of chocolates as a way to say “be mine” in Japan next month.

Facebook is generating money in a troubled global economy, COO Sheryl Sandberg said, pointing to the site’s increasing value as it heads toward its initial public offering.

Sandburg, speaking at the DLD Conference in Munich, held to spotlight top contributions in the digital and technological world, saying Facebook added $15.3 billion in value to the European economy last year alone.

Those numbers are likely to keep growing as Facebook expands, but the dollars aren’t just coming in through people who post status messages. The real money behind Facebook is through its advertising sales, which exceed those of any other website.

Sandberg said the European business report, derived from a Deloitte study, shows the social media site has far more value than “just posts and pictures and the fun things with friends.”

According to a Facebook report about the study, European businesses — just like those in the U.S. — are using the site to connect with customers, to advertise and build up brand identity. Thousands of companies make Facebook apps, and technology manufacturers are selling smartphones and tablets to users so they can connect from anywhere, expanding the service’s mobile reach.

In addition, business associated with the company was responsible for 232,000 jobs in Europe alone this year, said Sandberg, who closed the conference.

Facebook plans to start a promotion in Europe, similar to the one in the U.S., to give about $50 in free ad credits to 50,000 European small businesses, according to Sandberg, who noted that while $50 seems a minor amount, it is enough for businesses to reach their target customers on Facebook.

The Deloitte study, which details the growing value of Facebook, could give the company further ammunition for its IPO. Facebook will need to convince investors the site is highly profitable through its advertising, so the stock prices will continue to climb.

Financial experts already believe Facebook’s IPO could bring in $10 billion dollars or more, but investors could be wary if they’re not convinced that the site is profitable or secure, unlike other social media sites like the now-little-used MySpace, which was once the giant in the market.

Sandberg noted several European companies are already taking advantage of the significant business opportunities Facebook offers, including social game maker Wooga and Swedish music service Spotify, which allows Facebook users to enjoy music together and recently launched in the U.S.

Even though the average Facebook user has 130 friends, research shows “the distance between one person and one million is four steps,” Sandberg said. In other words, if just four people share content, it can reach one million users.

Sandberg said Facebook now drives more traffic than any other site, except Google, and Web visitors referred through Facebook are more engaged than others. This could lead to even more advertising dollars for Facebook, adding value not only to the site but to businesses looking to contact large audiences quickly.

Republican presidental candidate Newt Gingrich says he believes cyber-espionage should be considered an act of war, echoing the Pentagon’s stance on potential attacks to the nation’s computers.

Gingrich, in an interview with website Coffee and Markets, said “state-based covert activities” deserve a response that “creates a level of pain which teaches people not to do it.”

The front-running Republican candidate said he doesn’t believe the federal government has a “decisive” stance on cyber-terrorism.

However, the government cracked down on security breaches in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the State Department ousted a Venezuelan diplomat after she allegedly discussed possible cyber-attacks on U.S. soil.

Late last year, the Pentagon said it reserves the right to use military force against cyber-attacks, outlining an offensive plan and a specific military role in the event computer-generated attacks threaten the nation’s economy or infrastructure.

The potential for threats against the nation’s power grids, energy supply, public water systems and other critical systems’ supply chains supports the government’s strengthening its cyber-terrorism policy. As threats continue to proliferate, federal policies and procedures are likely to get even tougher.

Gingrich said if elected, he will seek to engage China and Russia — where groups have been accused of trying to infiltrate U.S. systems — in a high-level conversation and present them with an ultimatum, saying “there are games we’re not going to tolerate being played; we either need an armed truce or we’re going to engage as aggressively as you are.”

He said the talks should be “top secret,” and include people from the defense sector and people who “know an immense amount about this who aren’t part of any official structure.”

Gingrich ranks cyber-warfare as much of a threat as an electromagnetic pulse and a nuclear weapon in an American city, and thinks “all three of those require dramatically more attention than we’re giving to them.”

While Gingrich said he plans to take a tougher stance on cyber-terrorism, he’s not sure if he would include members of Congress in the talks.

Gingrich’s strong words, match up fairly closely with the Pentagon’s stance on cyber-war, showing that as the election process continues this year, cyber-terrorism might not just be a weapon that could be used against the U.S., but also as a political weapon.
